Europe Approves $237M for ams Osram Plant

Mar, 02/25/2025 - 08:00

ams Osram is set to receive €227 million ($237 million) in state aid from the Austrian Ministry of Economy and Labor to support the construction of an advanced manufacturing facility in Premstätten, Austria. The plant, expected to be operational in 2030, bolsters Europe’s semiconductor supply chain, particularly for automotive applications.

The facility will be based on a toolbox approach that combines CMOS technology for transistors with a through silicon via (TSV) technique. This allows for a vertical electrical connection of chips and/or optical filters, and thereby provides specific capabilities to the final chip. The advantage of such a tightly integrated process is the ability to produce Grade 0 automotive...

High-Quality Semiconductor Enhances SWIR Sensor Performance

Lun, 02/24/2025 - 08:00

SWIR sensors deliver clear visual information even in low-light conditions and can detect IR light that is both reflected and directly emitted by objects.

IR sensors use semiconductors to detect light signals and convert them into electrical signals. SWIR sensors typically use compound semiconductor materials, which have significantly higher electron mobility than single-element silicon semiconductors. The enhanced mobility provided by compound semiconductors allows even faint light signals to be detected with superior energy efficiency.

To advance the use of SWIR sensors for a range of applications, researchers at the Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science (KRISS) developed a high-quality compound semiconductor...

Single Photon Detector Proves Capable of High-Energy Particle Detection

Jue, 02/20/2025 - 08:00

Superconducting nanowire single photon detectors (SNSPDs) have the potential to function as highly accurate particle detectors, according to a study conducted at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Argonne National Laboratory. The findings could open new opportunities for the use of SNSPDs in the fields of nuclear and particle physics.

SNSPDs are optical and IR photon sensors with precise spatial and timing resolutions. They are used to detect individual photons in quantum cryptography, optical sensing, and quantum computing applications.

When SNSPDs absorb individual photons, small electrical changes in the nanowires are generated at very low temperatures, allowing the detection and measurement of single photons. The...

Hologram Method Boosts Additive Manufacturing

Mar, 02/18/2025 - 08:00

While traditional 3D printers work by depositing layers of material, tomographic volumetric additive manufacturing (TVAM) involves shining laser light at a rotating vial of resin until it hardens where accumulated energy exceeds a certain threshold. An advantage of TVAM is that it can produce objects in a matter of seconds, compared to approximately 10 minutes for layer-based 3D printing. But a disadvantage is that it is very inefficient, because only around 1% of the encoded light reaches the resin to produce the desired shape.

Researchers from EPFL’s Laboratory of Applied Photonic Devices, led by professor Christophe Moser, and from the University of Southern Denmark’s Centre for Photonics Engineering, led by professor...
