Cybersecurity: Is the Air Gap Strategy Making a Comeback?

AllAutomationWorldContent - Jue, 08/17/2017 - 16:09
Is the Air Gap Strategy Making a Comeback?

For years now, the prevailing advice from most industrial cybersecurity experts has been to approach security with a defense-in-depth strategy (i.e., multiple layers of protection) rather than with an air gap strategy. For the uninitiated, the term “air gap” refers to an industrial network that has no outside connections.

The release of an air gap version of Dell’s Endpoint Security Suite Enterprise software indicates not only the continued prevalence of air gapped industrial systems, but an acknowledgement that such systems also need cybersecurity protection.

Increased uptake of STEM subjects at A-Level is promising

engineeringspecifier - Jue, 08/17/2017 - 13:21

Today's A-Level results show a significant increase in the uptake of STEM subjects. In response to the news, Charles Senabulya, Vice President and Country Manager of SAS UKI, commented: "The uptake in STEM grades demonstrates that students are aware of the potential these skills will have in securing a career in our data-driven economy. Today, we must capture this enthusiasm and build a solid foundation for the future in areas of analytics, business intelligence and data management to ensure the UK can compete on the global stage.

Data acquisition system overcomes challenging environments

engineeringspecifier - Mié, 08/16/2017 - 14:28

The SLICE IP68 data acquisition system from DTS is designed to capture physical signals in challenging environments. Targeted at applications with size or mass constraints, SLICE IP68's 60 x 60 mm footprint makes it easy to embed in most test articles. The rugged housing is impervious to shock, water and dust, making SLICE ideal for testing in inclement weather or in environments that may cause condensation on the instrumentation.
