New power levels for brushless DC motor and gearhead combination with stable speed

With a very flat speed torque ratio the 40mm 170W brushless DC motor from maxon motor is suitable where minimal speed reduction is required under load. Particularly apt for process machinery or food production equipment where 24/7 continuous use regulated speed control is necessary. The pictured unit features a 2000qc incremental encoder and a 66:1 planetary gearhead. The output shaft is sealed and the unit can operate in small enclosures via conduction cooling. Brushless DC motor with temperature sensors

When prototyping with Brushless DC motors information is key to product success.

Pictured here is a highly customised brushless DC motor developed for special aerospace applications. The 200W nominal 30mm diameter has had a special winding wound to suit the unique requirements of the application where the motor needs characteristics for driving and generation. It is a 4 pole topography with a sealed stainless steel body and welded flanges. The application for this brushless DC motor requires operation for very short bursts of power at over 500W. To facilitate testing that gives design engineers absolute confidence the winding will never exceed its thermal limits a platinum thin film temperature sensor has been fitted in contact with each phase. This allows the R&D staff to slowly increase the duty cycle whilst monitoring temperature and develop controller functionalities around the thermal limits. In addition the motor has been assembled with a planetary gearhead that is quite special in itself. The gearhead ratio has been slightly adjusted to allow for smaller planetary gear diameters. The smaller diameters allow for an additional set of gears on the output stage increasing the torque capabilities. A special 2RS rubber sealed bearing has been incorporated along with a customer specified axial threaded bore in the middle of the shaft. At the rear of the motor is a 4,096 quad count encoder facilitating the smooth zero cogging motion control.

Saving the lives of preemie babies.

Paul is a robotically simulated training model of a 27 week old preemie baby. Created by an Austrian paediatrician to help train medical practitioners, maxon motors replicate the breathing movements of the baby.

Meet Paul. The smallest and most advanced high-end patient simulator in the world. Paul is a 27 week old preemie. He is 35cm long and weighs 1kg. He breathes on his own with a consistent heartbeat. His chest gently moves up and down, veins and arteries are visible under his thin skin. Paul needs artificial respiration and will sometimes turn blue.

Born to train medical staff in emergency situations that occur every day in neonatal intensive care units, the creator of Paul is Jens-Christian Schwindt, an ex-paediatrician in the Division of Neonatology of the Vienna General Hospital. In 2015 Schwindt started his company SIMCharacters, that arose from a need where “Critical situations in preterm care have to be trained time and time again, under as realistic conditions as possible, to ensure that everything goes equally smoothly in a real crisis” says Schwindt. With the ability to evoke emotions and cry, the baby looks exceptionally lifelike and is full of high-technology on the inside. His skull hosts a Linux system, he is charged cordlessly by induction using a customary charging pad. Paul can be operated for up to two hours. When he has difficulty breathing or the oxygen saturation drops, his head turns blue. Sophisticated hardware and software fit into a silicone skin.

Particularly suitable for manufacturing lines and process control applications the maxon integrated drive features a maintenance free combination of a 54 mNm 12, 24 and 48V brushless DC motor, 4000qc 3 channel incremental encoder with line driver (complimentary channels) and a full digital position and speed control unit. The position control is offered in two versions. One with internal processor and memory for pre-programming and standalone position control operation. This unit also has CANOpen master functionality. The second version is a CAN slave unit. Multiple integrated drives can then be daisy chained off the first and a complete standalone coordinated multi axis drive network can be configured. Alternatively the slave drives can be connected directly with a PLC or FPGA based master. The motor units are supplied with the powerful EPOS studio tool for easy gain configuration and motor tuning. Standardised IEC 61131-3 simplifies development and reduces costs. Planetary gearheads are available in a piece part system allowing adjustment for required application speed and torque.

maxon DC motor control software and firmware updates.

maxon motor have released new software and firmware for the EPOS DC motor position controllers.

Available immediately for maxon EPOS 4 motion controllers are the latest firmware and software releases giving additional functionality supporting the new EtherCAT adaptation module. The release support the entire power range of both stand along position controllers and also the range of OEM style controller modules. The files for the latest firmware version 0130h can be found on the maxon motor website along with the new software version 3.3 of maxon motors configuration studio and GUI. New features of implemented with the firmware update include EtherCAT CoE communication for EPOS 4 units fitted with EtherCAT extensions, Cyclic Synchronus Position Mode and a new object for storage of custom values. Anti-windup behaviour has been further improved along with improved automatic bitrate detection. The new EPOS command library 6.3.1.0 including Windows DLL, .Net Library, LabView instrument driver and Linux Library is also available on the maxon motor website. All documentation has been updated to November/ December 2017 edition. New deliveries will include the updates and a leaflet will be included in every shipment.

New size BLDC motor released from maxon: perfect for robotics & hand-held device applications

A powerful and cost-effective BLDC motor in a new 30mm diameter is now available from maxon motor.

Now available in a new size and two versions, is the powerful, high torque and low cogging brushless DC motor. The new size EC-i DC motor has a diameter of 30 millimeters and is available in two lengths, each in a Standard and a High Torque version, with a maximum nominal torque of up to 110 mNm at 75 W.

maxon’s EC-i 30 DC motors are a cost-effective alternative to comparable maxon DC motor offerings. The motors have a compact design but are very powerful, making them especially suitable for hand-held devices and applications in robotics. Renewable wind energy harvested from an altitude of 500m.

A new method of garnering renewable energy is being explored and it’s not from wind turbines.

A Dutch start-up company, KitePower is creating a system to produce green energy from Kites. In collaboration with the Delft University in the Netherlands, the approach consists of a generator on the ground that is connected directly to a cable winch that has a steered kite attached. The kite pulls the cable upward by flying in a figure-8 pattern creating a strong tractive force with the ability to reach heights up to 500 metres. When altitude is achieved the cable is retracted (using very little energy) and the procedure is repeated.

The device offers an attractive alternative to diesel generators and wind turbines. In comparison the kite needs less material for construction, is more mobile and can flexibly use winds up to 500m. Of particular benefit to secluded communities, military camps or remote islands the first commercial version is due for release at the end of 2018.

This included integrating DC motors, different sensors, transmitters, receivers and batteries while considering extreme radial forces on the gearhead. First earth, then outer space and now underwater. The new Aquatic division at maxon motor develop DC motor actuators, thrusters and systems for subsea use.

Focused on applications that require reliability and efficiency the new maxon subsea motors use BLDC (brushless DC motors) in pressure compensated oil filled housings. ROV and AUV applications will benefit from maxon motors’ lighter and more powerful new solutions including four new thruster sizes. The MT20, MT30, MT40 and MT70 can be used at depths to 6000 meters with their corresponding maxon pressure compensators. The maxon thrusters for AUV and ROV applications also have the ability to have the propeller geometry optimised for special requirements, or to use the standard propeller geometry that is most efficient in one direction and has approximately 80% in reverse thrust. External componentry of the thrusters are made from titanium or plastic for use in salt water and all parts have been isolated to prevent galvanic reactions.

New DC motor technology released from maxon.

maxon motor is introducing new miniature brushless DC motors, brushless frameless motors in kit form and EtherCAT positioning controller solutions.

A number of new products are released from DC motor drive specialist maxon motor. More configurable brushless DC motors (from the ECX SPEED range) in both Standard and High Power options are available with diameters of 13mm and 19mm, along with matching planetary gearheads and encoders. This brushless DC motor has very high speeds and is particularly suitable for power tools and demanding speed & positioning control tasks. All components can be configured online. These customised drives are assembled using automated processes and are ready for shipping after no more than 11 working days.

Newly released is the popular high-torque powerful brushless flat DC motor available in a frameless kit. This means that the stator and rotor are delivered separately and joined only during the assembly of the device. This brushless frameless kit is especially suitable for robotics applications where space is constrained.

Maxon have also developed their compact EPOS4 positioning controller to be equipped with an EtherCAT expansion board for integration into any EtherCAT network.

New 30mm brushless DC motor range

maxon motor have released a new range of 30mm diameter brushless DC motors in versions that offer increased torque or increased speed.

The new range will initially consist of 4 power versions ranging from 30 to 75W. They feature uncompromised quality with all stainless steel laser welded flanges and body. Stainless steel large dimension preloaded ball bearing system and a hardened stainless steel shaft. They integrate into the maxon modular system with a range of encoder and gearbox selections allowing engineers to create a dedicated mechatronic solution for each application. The range uses the latest production technologies offered by maxon motors new manufacturing facility in Korea which achieves a cost competitive solution suitable for general automation, power tools, seat actuators and process control machinery. Startup companies are exciting and driving the world of innovation and technology. Maxon looks at four companies launched recently that have addressed simple solutions to everyday challenges and interview a founder of one of the startups.
