New size BLDC motor released from maxon: perfect for robotics & hand-held device applications

Now available in a new size and two versions, is the powerful, high torque and low cogging brushless DC motor. The new size EC-i DC motor has a diameter of 30 millimeters and is available in two lengths, each in a Standard and a High Torque version, with a maximum nominal torque of up to 110 mNm at 75 W.

Renewable wind energy harvested from an altitude of 500m.

A new method of garnering renewable energy is being explored and it’s not from wind turbines.

A Dutch start-up company, KitePower is creating a system to produce green energy from Kites. In collaboration with the Delft University in the Netherlands, the approach consists of a generator on the ground that is connected directly to a cable winch that has a steered kite attached. The kite pulls the cable upward by flying in a figure-8 pattern creating a strong tractive force with the ability to reach heights up to 500 metres. When altitude is achieved the cable is retracted (using very little energy) and the procedure is repeated.

The device offers an attractive alternative to diesel generators and wind turbines. In comparison the kite needs less material for construction, is more mobile and can flexibly use winds up to 500m. Of particular benefit to secluded communities, military camps or remote islands the first commercial version is due for release at the end of 2018.

This included integrating DC motors, different sensors, transmitters, receivers and batteries while considering extreme radial forces on the gearhead. First earth, then outer space and now underwater. The new Aquatic division at maxon motor develop DC motor actuators, thrusters and systems for subsea use.

Focused on applications that require reliability and efficiency the new maxon subsea motors use BLDC (brushless DC motors) in pressure compensated oil filled housings. ROV and AUV applications will benefit from maxon motors’ lighter and more powerful new solutions including four new thruster sizes. The MT20, MT30, MT40 and MT70 can be used at depths to 6000 meters with their corresponding maxon pressure compensators. The maxon thrusters for AUV and ROV applications also have the ability to have the propeller geometry optimised for special requirements, or to use the standard propeller geometry that is most efficient in one direction and has approximately 80% in reverse thrust. External componentry of the thrusters are made from titanium or plastic for use in salt water and all parts have been isolated to prevent galvanic reactions.

New DC motor technology released from maxon.

maxon motor is introducing new miniature brushless DC motors, brushless frameless motors in kit form and EtherCAT positioning controller solutions.

A number of new products are released from DC motor drive specialist maxon motor. More configurable brushless DC motors (from the ECX SPEED range) in both Standard and High Power options are available with diameters of 13mm and 19mm, along with matching planetary gearheads and encoders. This brushless DC motor has very high speeds and is particularly suitable for power tools and demanding speed & positioning control tasks. All components can be configured online. These customised drives are assembled using automated processes and are ready for shipping after no more than 11 working days.

Newly released is the popular high-torque powerful brushless flat DC motor available in a frameless kit. This means that the stator and rotor are delivered separately and joined only during the assembly of the device. This brushless frameless kit is especially suitable for robotics applications where space is constrained.

Maxon have also developed their compact EPOS4 positioning controller to be equipped with an EtherCAT expansion board for integration into any EtherCAT network.

These innovations are on display from November 28 to 30 at the SPS IPC Drives exhibition in Nuremberg, Germany.

New 30mm brushless DC motor range

maxon motor have released a new range of 30mm diameter brushless DC motors in versions that offer increased torque or increased speed.

The new range will initially consist of 4 power versions ranging from 30 to 75W. They feature uncompromised quality with all stainless steel laser welded flanges and body. Stainless steel large dimension preloaded ball bearing system and a hardened stainless steel shaft. They integrate into the maxon modular system with a range of encoder and gearbox selections allowing engineers to create a dedicated mechatronic solution for each application. The range uses the latest production technologies offered by maxon motors new manufacturing facility in Korea which achieves a cost competitive solution suitable for general automation, power tools, seat actuators and process control machinery. Maximum speeds of 15,000rpm and selectable winding configurations allowing for use on 12V, 24V and 48V DC systems add versatility and this is coupled with torque levels over 100mNm from a 30mm diameter motor. Pictured below is the first example of the Kählig Antriebstechnik M80x80 24V 128rpm DC motor + 24V holding brake, digital encoder and 81mm 25:1 planetary gearbox. All the individual components have been specially flanged and gasketed for sealing against moisture and particles to IP65. This particular example was from the first shipment in Australia and supplied for an Agricultural application. Though it is also suitable for machining and process control applications with harsh environments. New high resolution encoder for DC motors and when to use them

maxon motor release its new ENX 16mm RIO encoder with 65,536 counts per turn for DC motor applications requiring fine positioning and constant velocity.

This new encoder has been released with 262,144 quad counts per revolution. But where to use resolutions not seen in such a tiny size encoder? An example would be pick and place machines for the placement of electronic components during pcb manufacture. New microprocessors and FPGA devices can have up to 2601 contact points on a 0.4mm grid. The pick and place machine for this part would need a controllability of nine hundredths of a revolution and the accuracy would require an encoder to be fitted to the positioning motor with ten times this amount. Also applications with demanding constant velocity requirements require high resolution encoders. Enabled by continuously increasing processing speeds new high resolution encoders vastly improve the feedback loop. Each example requires the high resolution and also error free signals at high speeds. The RIO is an Reflective Interpolated Optical design that allows cor compact dimensions of 16mm diameter and 7mm length. Output signals are RS422 differential including an index pulse. Delta robots, Precision manufacturing tools, 3D printers and the semiconductor industry can all benefit from this new product.

New IP67 12V and 24V DC motors with internal encoder and holding brake.

Supplied via maxon motor Australia, specifically designed for the Agriculture industry is the first of the new IP67 12V and 24V DC motors with an incremental encoder built inside the motor body.

The first motor in this series being developed is the 80mm diameter 172mm long 250W brushed permanent magnet motor assembled with 81mm IP67 gearheads. The IP67 gearhead range has an large reduction range to select from facilitating torque production of up to 180Nm. The internal magnetic encoder sits behind the motor commutator, has two channels and can be run on either 5V DC or 24V DC. Mounting the encoder internally also has the advantage of freeing up the motor rear shaft where an external holding brake can be fitted. The first units supplied will have a B56 brake that combined with gearing can provide the 180Nm of torque also for holding the load in place on the unpowered condition. Future versions will have the option of either power activated or power de-activated holding brakes also with a sealed enclosure for harsh environments.

New top of the range compact DC motor encoder

A 16mm encoder from maxon for precise positioning and control of DC motors.

Maxon encoders allow for precise position and velocity control of DC motors. The latest release is a top-of-the-range high-resolution encoder, the ENX 16 RIO (Reflective, Interpolated, Optical). This encoder offers an impressive resolution of up to 65,536 counts per turn in a casing that is robust and compact. The resolution can be configured at the factory, that is particularly useful where the DC motor combination is tailor-made and then resolution can be refined to the respective motor. With 16mm outer diameter and 7mm overall length, the housing is mechanically tough and protected from dust due to its injection-moulded construction. The encoder operates at temperatures ranging between -40 °C to +100 °C.

Requirements on encoders are becoming more and more demanding. This applies particularly to positioning applications with precision constant-speed control, where increasingly compact housings need to accommodate an ever greater number of electrical connections. The encoder can be configured with matching maxon DC motor and gearhead combinations online. It fits the new brushless EC-i 30 motors and the brushed DCX motors (with 16mm diameters plus). The counts per turn and the electrical interface of the encoder can also be configured specifically.

maxon motor have developed the Exoskeleton Drive GEN.1 for use in hip and knee exoskeletons.

The global Exoskeleton market is growing in both market share and technological developments at a rapid rate each year. Maxon motor have several global customers we have worked with to develop brushless DC motor solutions for use in robotic limbs.

Available from the beginning of October 2017 is a complete joint actuation unit consisting of a pancake brushless DC motor (EC90 flat) with inertia optimised rotor, Internal high resolution 4096 MILE Encoder, planetary gearhead with absolute encoder and EPOS4 position controller with CAN and RS232 interface. Fitting the 17bit SSI absolute encoder directly at the joint rotation to a degree will negate the effect of gearhead backlash giving designers increased positioning accuracy. The unit will deliver 54Nm of continuous torque and 120Nm on a 20% duty cycle. The system can be operated on supplies between 10 and 50V DC and the actuation speed is up to 22rpm. New Autoclavable brushless DC motor range and sterilisation cycles.

There are many different benchmarks in the marketplace for the sterilisation capabilities of devices. maxon motor explain the cycle and testing process for Autoclavable brushless DC motors.

maxon motor develop brushless DC motors that can be sterilised for medical and dental applications. Recently released is the new ECX range of motors with sterilisation capability on 13,16,19 and 22mm diameter versions. The new range of motors complement the existing 4 pole sterilisable 30mm brushless 150W motor and offer high speed capability up to 120,000rpm. maxon motor test the brushless motors to either 1000 autoclave cycles or 2000 cycles depending on the product. For motors with hall sensors fitted the motor is typically cycled through 1000 autoclave cycles and without hall sensors 2000 cycles. Gearheads are available with additional shaft seals. With the additional seal they are tested to 2000 cycles and without, 1000 cycles. Another new product that offers a completely sterilisable positioning system for the first time is an encoder rated and tested for 1000 cycles.

The maxon motor internal autoclave testing is carried out with the autoclave with a vacuum phase. The motors are unpacked and mounted without any additional protection. Three vacuum cycles are made at the beginning to ensure the internals of the motor become damp. The sterilisation atmosphere is built up with steam which remains constant for 18 minutes at 134˚C, 100% humidity and 2.3 bar of pressure. The unit is then cooled to 70˚C and dried. Each individual autoclave cycles takes approximately 1 hour. After 100 cycles the motors are removed from the autoclave and visually checked and motor operation is checked. Following this the motor is then removed after 250 cycles and visually checked in addition to data acquisition of the running data, motor noise, vibration and electrical strength test at up to 500V DC. Typical batch test cycles are conducted with 10 pcs and the tests are repeated with design changes. Internal testing of the motors to 2000 cycles takes approximately six months.

Maxon’s brushless frameless DC motors are designed for applications with space and weight constraints.

DC motors don’t always fit seamlessly into applications. Particularly in robotic joints, the space and weight constraints can take off the shelf DC motors past their threshold. These motors must also offer high torque yet be lightweight to meet the needs of the application’s dynamic movements. For this growing market, maxon motor developed a brushless flat motor as a frameless kit. The rotor and stator are provided separately, without bearings and motor shaft and connected when these components are put together. This offering brings the best of both worlds: high torque density with the smallest dimension possible. With outer diameters of only 43 to 90 mm, the brushless frameless flat motors are particularly compact. Designed as external rotor motors, they offer plenty of space inside for cable glands. For easy control these are delivered with Hall sensors.

The benefit of the brushless frameless motor kits are low cogging torque, high overload capacity, high torques through the multi-pole external rotor, space for cable glands, supplied equipped with Hall sensors and thermal sensors, and speaking from our own experience; higher levels of integration into robotic joint applications.
