MicroLED Assembly Gets Boost from Vacuum-Assisted Transfer Printing

photonics - Mar, 01/02/2024 - 08:00

Compared to conventional light sources like OLEDs and LCDs, microLEDs — inorganic LED chips less than 100 μm in size — show superior reliability, stability, and optoelectronic properties. Despite these advantages, their deployment into next generation display technology is encumbered by manufacturing challenges.

Mass transfer with high selectivity and controllability is essential for rearranging microLED dies from a growth substrate onto a final substrate with the desired layout and precise alignment needed to reduce the final product costs. However, existing transfer methods have many challenges, including the need for additional adhesives, misalignment, low transfer yield, and chip damage.

Laser Technology Produces Beam Suitable for Radiation Therapy

photonics - Lun, 01/01/2024 - 08:00

In experiments at the Advanced Laser Light Source Laboratory at the Institut national de recherche scientifique (INRS), researchers demonstrated that ultrafast laser technology can potentially be used in radiation treatment of cancer.

The INRS team collaborated with researchers at McGill University Health Centre to show that electrons accelerated in ambient air can provide a high enough dose rate for radiation therapy applications.
